Soul for Ontika

“Ontika” Tallinn it says on the side. When googling “Ontika”, I learn that it’s a small place in the east of Estonia, close to the border of Russia. The place has the country’s highest waterfall. Twenty meters.
Furthermore, it says that the French town of Dieppe gave birth to it in 1984, before it moved to Veerenni 39 in the Estonian capital at the age of thirteen. I’m not certain what the boat did growing up, but at twenty-two, it now serves as a floating shrimp factory.

Looking at it from the fifth floor of the city library in Reykjavik, it seems older than in its early twenties with its dirty red and white striped body soaked in rust. But then again I like to think of the rust as a sign of how many oceans, harbours and women it has had through the years. Like sailor tattoos, in a way.

Going back to my flat, I decide to put together a soundtrack for Ontika. A windy blend of some sweet soul for its sixteen hundred mile journey back home...
